The section of Osborne township which now includes the city of Edgerton was first settled in 1876. Osborne township experienced rapid settlement during 1878 and 1879, and the need for a market was of prime importance. When the line of Southern Minnesota Railroad had been established through the township, the founding of Edgerton was begun. The railroad company gave the “Edgerton” to the new station in honor of General Alonzo J. Edgerton, under whom several of the earliest settlers of the vicinity served during the Civil War.

Today Edgerton has 5 churches, public and private schools for more than 650 children from K-12. Each high school has won the Minnesota State Basketball Championship.

Edgerton has two grocery stores, two hardware stores,  two car dealerships, three greenhouse/florists, three gift and collectible shops, four beauty salons, a bakery, meat market, and a Taxidermy business each drawing customers from a fifty mile plus radius.  The post office, bank, library, weekly paper,  Bowling Alley, Pizza Ranch, gas and service stations,  Medical  center, volunteer ambulance and fire departments and several other businesses add to the structure of the community.  Edgerton also has a large swimming pool, 3 parks and a campground with a fishing pond.

Edgerton's commercial base is primarily agricultural, but several employers play a significant role in broadening the economy. Fey Industries is a manufacturer of imprinted vinyl promotional products (3 ring binders, notebooks, calendars etc...), and is now in its  third generation of local ownership and management.  Fey also owns  and operates out of the Edgerton Facility, Blackbourn Industries  which manufactures media packaging materials for CD's, DVD's, VHS and cassette albums and Universal Packaging Systems manufacturing blister packs and clamshells.
