The section of Osborne township which now includes the city of Edgerton was first settled in 1876. Osborne township experienced rapid settlement during 1878 and 1879, and the need for a market was of prime importance. When the line of Southern Minnesota Railroad had been established through the township, the founding of Edgerton was begun. The railroad company gave the “Edgerton” to the new station in honor of General Alonzo J. Edgerton, under whom several of the earliest settlers of the vicinity served during the Civil War.
